2017 - A Year in Review with our Maui Photography Team

Wow what a year! It was so amazing it took us an entire month of reflection to take in all the awesomeness! We wanted to put together a look back on all our portraits to see all the pretty that happened this year.
As we reflect upon the past year, we are humbled by the continued support of our fabulous clients. From amazing people that are new to our work, to the incredible people that return time and time again, we love creating a wonderful working relationship with the happy faces we are fortunate enough to meet. Whether it's a family vacation, Maui senior portraits or a couple's escape, we recognize the profound responsibility that comes along with being asked to freeze these moments in time. Days can be fleeting, but these precious memories can last forever through the art we strive to create. Thank you so much to every person that has a role in this work we love so much; clients, our team of talented photographers our "ohana" in our office - it takes a team. We are so grateful for the people we are blessed to work with, and the beaming beauties we are lucky enough to work for. THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!
Thanks for a superb 2017 and cheers to an excellent upcoming 2018! Warm Aloha!!!

Clear Skies, Happy Smiles - The Justice Family's Maui Portraits

For the Justice Family's first trip to Hawaii, they wanted to commemorate with Maui Portraits. Having made the trip from Utah, it was only the second time the youngsters had seen the beach. Judging by the sheer joy on their faces it appears the beach was a hit with them though. It's always a pleasure to see multiple generations come together. It reminds us how important family truly is. For their session, they chose the always fabulous DT Fleming Beach. This spot boasts such gorgeous blue hues that it really can be epic in the morning. Between the contrast in the greenery, sand, and sea, it's something to behold. We are so glad that the Justice Family now gets to freeze this moment in time and forever keep the memory of their time together in this beautiful place. Thank you, to all of you, for letting our team capture this day. Warm Aloha!!!

An Adventure of a Lifetime Awaits - Kayla & Bob's Maui Couples Portraits

On an epic morning on the North shore, we had the pleasure of meeting Kayla and Bob. To compliment both the decor of their home and theme of their future wedding, they chose a location with both outrageous ocean blue views and gorgeous woods. They couldn't have been any sweeter, or more adorable, as they celebrated their engagement with Maui Couples Portraits. We had so much fun with them and could not have asked for a better day for them.  Maui was putting on a spectacular show for them with a clear sky and vivid scenes. Kayla and Bob, it was our pleasure capturing this new status of your lives and we wish you all the best for your adventure ahead. Thank you for choosing Karma Hill Photography! Congratulations and Warm Aloha!!!

Views for Days - The Jenson's Maui Family Portraits

There's something so magical about Ironwoods Beach in the evening, we just love it. What better place than this spectacular spot for a Maui Family Portrait. That was the Jenson's thoughts exactly. To commemorate their annual adventure on island, this fun-loving family took advantage of the multitude of back drops at this Western shore. With its pastel sunsets and dramatic scenes, these portraits have captured a moment that will transport our Washington State guests back to the Magic Isle when they let their imaginations run wild. Thank you, Jensen Family, for choosing Karma Hill Photography. It was so wonderful getting to meet and work with you. We hope you see you back again next time!!! Until then, Warm Aloha!!!

Aloha Oleksa Family! - Maui Family Portraits for a Maui Family!

We have been lucky enough to call the Oleksa family "neighbors" for the past four years as they own Green Ti Boutique and Massage just across the street from out studio in Wailuku Town. We just moved our location and are sad we won't be able to drop in for a chair massage when our shoulders are sore from hours of editing! Luckily, we got to spend some time with them at the beach near their home in Kihei and had a great time chasing their adorable daughter all over the place.  As a busy family, who own their own business, they had not made the time to capture family photos for a long time, and recently family photos became a top priority after a major health scare in the family.  It's times like these that makes you want to document what a sweet life you have and hold those you love just a little bit closer.  We are so happy that everyone is on the mend, and that we had the chance to document the love and bond of this sweet little family! If you find yourself needing a break, be sure to check out their cute shop in Wailuku and treat yourself to some pampering with an awesome massage!

Maui Model Photographer - Meet the Stunning Beauty from Canada, Laurel!!!

We had so much fun with this Maui photo session. Laurel is a beautiful young lady from Canada that is just starting her modeling career! We were honored she chose us as her Maui model photographer to create stunning pictures for her portfolio. She is clearly at natural at this model business and she made our job so easy. Staff photographer Sasha met her at Southside beach last week where they took advantage of all the gorgeous backdrops, frolicked in the water, and really just had a blast together. Thank you Laurel for choosing us as your Maui model photographer! We wish you luck in all of your future endeavors and hope to see you again in Maui soon!!

Customize Your Photo Shoot with Props! - Maui Beach Portrait Prop List by Karma Hill Photography

While we love our Maui portraits to be as natural as possible, sometimes the addition of one or two cute props can really make a photo session special, and some props double as ways to keep the kids happy and also look adorable in your photos!  Below you will see some of our available props that you can add to your portrait session, free of charge, as long as we have them available! Just let us know what you would like! If you don't see something you want, let us know we may be able to source it or rent it on Maui ( for an additional fee).  If you are looking for something REALLY special and styled just for you, say a romantic picnic on the beach, or a VW van with surfboards, let us know, we work the best in the industry when it comes to styling photo shoots and weddings on Maui!

Sand shovels and buckets - This is a great way to keep little ones in one place and busy, they also look lovely in photos and can show a family interacting with each other playing in the sand. We ALWAYS have these available, in fact our photographers usually have them in their cars especially for Maui family portraits

Maui Family portrait props

Giant windmills (2) - we have one in coral and one in blue as well as several smaller windmills, kids love these and have a fun time letting them spin in the Maui trade winds.

Maui Family portrait props

White Adirondack Chairs (2) - Fun and beachy and great for kids who do not like their toes in the sand.  Only available on beaches with easy access from a parking lot as they are too heavy to carry long distances.

Red and White Striped Beach Umbrella (1) - This bright and fun umbrella has a vintage feel and adds a fun pop of color to any beach session.

Teal Surfboard (1) whether or not you surf, this is a cute prop to incorporate into your photos!

Beach Cruiser Bike (1) Adorable retro looking teal beach cruiser, fun for couples photos!

Vintage Radio Flyer Wagon (1) Kids love this wagon and it looks adorable in photos! If your portrait session takes you to a place where you can pull it it also makes for adorable action shots!

Mini Maui Portrait Session with The Deckers! - by Maui Portrait Photographer, Karma Hill

I have been lucky enough to call the Deckers my friends since waaaaaaaay back in 1996 when we were wee freshman in college.  That is how long Kendra and Phil have been together and I met Kendra just before she met and fell head over heels in love with Phil.  Kendra and I pledged the same sorority as freshman and soon became as close as real sisters, not just the Greek kind.  I still consider Kendra a sister from another mister and she is family to me.  They have been out to visit us in Maui more times than I can count, but this is the first time that I have had them in front of my professional camera.  It seems we are always way to busy catching up and having fun to pause and take time to get photos. I made sure they didn't leave Maui this time without at least a mini session (the night before they left of course!). Their daughter does not like to sit still for one minute, so we pretended we were just going to the beach to play!  She lead her own parade using my fun giant pinwheel as her marching staff and Kendra and Phil had a great time getting wet and sandy playing with her in the ocean.  After the shoot, we all changed in to dry clothes and enjoyed one last sunset together with our families, for this trip.  I miss you already Deckers, I hope you can make it out for another visit soon!!

Jinky Art Photography Workshop Shoot Number 3 - by Maui Photographer Karma Hill

This is the third in a series of blog posts I am writing about my experience at the Jinky Art Photography workshop I took in November in California, you can see the back story about the workshop on the first blog post here: http://www.mauiphotographerblog.com/2014/12/jinky-art-photography-workshop-shoot.html
I have to say, I was completely out of my element on the first part of this shoot.  As someone who lives for soft glowy light, this shoot in the trees was a huge challenge.  The light was flat and dark behind the subjects and the trees were gnarly and not that "pretty" tree that I love.  It took me a while to decide how I was going to edit them. My usual style just looked awful with them  then as I was playing around with them, I started taking them darker and started to like the look better, I decided to give it a moody feel, like you might not know what or whom might be lurking in the shadows behind. Barb the leader chose this amazing long skirt she had made custom just for this shoot, I adored the way it flowed and looked on the swing.  You might see a reincarnation of this shoot by me that has a swing and a flowy skirt, but this time with that glowy light and green trees that live in my dreams. After this set up we played with a parachute and balloons and the adorable girls until there was no more light.  All in all it was a very good learning experience and forced me to step outside my comfort zone!
