I get a lot of questions around photo editing, specifically which software is best, and what do you really do when you edit a photo? Well to answer these questions, I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I would recommend Lightroom to anybody, pro or enthusiast alike. It is a software that can help you organize and tag your photos, edit them and import and export them. This is especially handy when you want to re-size a lot of photos at one time. Rather than opening each image and re-saving it in a different size, you can export as many photos as you want at whatever size you want and Lightroom will do the rest! I also do 90% of my editing in Lightroom you can do all the basic edits you will need with this amazing software such as:
Cropping
Color Correcting
Exposure correction
Removing items from the background
Converting to Black and White and other artistic color finishes
and much much more!
Photoshop is an amazing tool, it has so much to offer however that it can be a little intimidating and overwhelming to someone new to digital photo editing. This is a tool that every pro should have and know how to use as it can do detail work that Lightroom can not such as detailed skin correction, slimming, adding textures and just about anything else you can imagine. If you are someone who just wants to make your photos look better Lightroom would be all you need. It is easier to use than Photoshop and much less expensive. If you want some of the most popular features of Photoshop but don't want to pay the full price, there is also Photoshop Elements that is less expensive and less intimidating. Lightroom works seamlessly transferring photos back and forth between any version of Photoshop. So you can take a photo from Lightroom, edit it in Photoshop save it and the saved version will appear in your Lightroom catalog right next to the un-edited version.
Most photos can always use a little help to look even better, here is an example of a photo before and after editing:

The first photo is a little over exposed and the bright sunlight blows out the background. With some exposure correction, cropping and some contrast it turns into a very nice photo.
Happy Shooting!!
